The realm of the bizarre and weird automobiles is a vast one, that’s for certain, but there are few cars that can match the Amphicar for sheer weirdness. Produced in Karlsruhe and then Berlin, Germany, from 1961 to 1968, the Amphicar tried to be everything to everyone and failed on all levels. Today, Amphicars are very rare, as fewer then 2,500 in total were produced, so they are appreciated for their curiosity value, but they are terrible both on the road, and on the water. Yes, water!
Powered by an anemic 1.1-liter four-cylinder engine, the Amphicar could count on 38 horsepower, which was woefully inadequate to power such a heavy car. The top speed, as it was, was 65 miles an hour, and boasted a 0-60 acceleration time of 42 seconds. Needless to say, driving this unstable car at such high speeds was highly dangerous and not recommended!
Surely, however, this ungainly brick would turn into a graceful swan when it entered the water? Not quite. It stayed a brick. A heavy, rusty, leaky brick. That’s right. The floating car, whose ability to cruise on water, was prone to rust, leaks (that can’t be good) and of course, was so slow (thanks to its single small propeller) that it could barely reach 7 knots.
If you own an Amphicar, and its in good shape, then you’re probably sitting on a pile of cash because of its rarity. Just don’t try to use it, drive it, or heaven forbid, take it to the water. Me, I’d just sell it.
