I must admit that the thing is far from my favorite vehicle; it looks, to me, like a poorly assembled kit car. The fact is, however, that one must give credit where credit it due, and in the world of Things, this is a fine specimen! I snapped this 1974 Volkswagen Thing at the Granby International car show in late July (2012). The thing is a strange vehicle. Mechanically, it borrows heavily from the VW Beetle, with which it shares its engine, four-speed manual transmission and more, while its floor pan is lifted from the Karmann Ghia, which was wider than the Beetle. Originally intended as a stop-gap military vehicle, it was also produced quite massively for the civilian market, and has developed its own dedicated cult following.
