For many years, Bentley automobiles were seen as nothing more than Rolls-Royce with different trim and very slightly different bodies. The engineers at Crewe, where Bentleys are built decided to put a stop to that. After missing the boat with the 1983 Mulsanne Turbo, they tried again and succeeded in style with the 1985 Bentley Turbo R. It kept all the opulent luxury buyers expected from a Bentley. but made them fun to drive, too. It was lowered, reinforced for extra rigidity and fitted with much wider tires, and suddenly, it was sports car. Ok, not quite, but very close and very, very much fun to drive.
As always, Bentley wasn’t forthcoming with an actual horsepower figure for this car, simply saying that it was ‘adequate’, which in this case is a massive understatement. The Turbo R was powered by a 6.7 liter, turbocharged V8 which certainly provided all the torque this big car needed to get off from the line in a hurry. What is not a matter of conjecture is the speed: the Bentley Turbo R could reach an artificially-limited top speed of 140 mph, and more impressively, reach 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, an incredible feat for such a big car.
What is also a fact is that the Bentley Turbo R is a classic, but the good kind of classic. The kind where they made a lot, relatively speaking, and priced decently enough that it’s not an unbelievable fantasy to believe you may be able to buy one… One day!
