1994 Aston Martin VIRAGE VANTAGE

When Ford bought a controlling interest in Aston Martin back in 1987, many were afraid that the company would lose its unmistakable charm and British-ness, so to speak. That was not the be. No amount of money and organizational talent could make the creative process less chaotic at Aston Martin, and that’s a good thing, because it resulted in the 1994 Aston Martin Virage Vantage, at the time one of the most powerful production cars ever built. This car really needs to be seen to be believed. On the design side, it retained the front grille that distinguished it as an Aston Martin, and everything else is bigger, meaner and exults aggression. It’s an awesome car!

As far as the drive-train is concerned, the Virage Vantage really has it all: a supremely powerful 32-valve, 5.3-liter V8, boasting no less than 2 superchargers, one for each cylinder bank. That monster produced 550 horsepower, a number that is only starting to be matched today by very high-end cars. A very heavy-duty six-speed manual transmission delivered all that power and massive amounts of torque to the rear wheels, propelling the Vantage to a top speed of almost 300 km/h (186 mph), and accelerating to 60 in a minuscule 4.7 seconds.

There is absolutely no doubt that the Aston Martin Virage Vantage is a true supercar: an aggressive design, immense power and a little rough around the edges. What’s not to like? Except probably the gas mileage…
