Most North Americans over a certain age, Canadians specifically, remember the Skoda as just another Communist car, a step up from a Lada or a Yugo, certainly, but nothing impressive, or that you’d want to take your date to the prom with! Beware to be flabbergasted when you meet the 1995 Skoda Octavia 1.8 20V; it’s a real car, with real performance, high quality standards and everything that you’d except from, say, a Volkswagen. That’s because it is one. Remember the single-platform, multi-brand thing VW was embarked on (and still is, because it worked)? Well, after having bought into Skoda in the early 90s, they decided to turn it into a real car company, with great success.
The Octavia 1.8 20V was powered, unsurprisingly, by an advanced, 1.8-liter, 20-valve four-cylinder engine that developed 125 horsepower. It was enough to propel the car to a top speed of 121 miles per hour, with a 0-60 acceleration time of 9.5 seconds.
Positioned as an entry-level performance sedan, the Octavia did very well with former Volvo and Rover drivers, who may have felt abandoned as their brand of choice moved up the scale. The 1995 Skoda Octavia 1.8 20V was not a car to be embarrassed about, and it was the right price, too.
